Excerpt

This story felt oddly prescient to write - it was written when my kids were both under ten years old, but I was imagining and thinking ahead to when my son (the older one) would eventually leave home to go off for school or whatever journeys he would take. That sensation leading up to the departure is a scary one, and I wondered what it might be like for his sister.

I remember writing this in summer, with long colourful skies in the evening. I must have been looking at how birds flew, for it started to simmer in my mind that the creatures in this story should be a sort of human-bird hybrid. When I was a kid I remember thinking the bird-headed people in Prince of Persia 2 were super cool, and this style of creature exists in many forms, such as the Aarakocra from D&D lore.
